While insurance is still little known among many ordinary Cambodians, the industry has grown rapidly with average annual growth of 25%. This growth has been fuelled by many factors from continued economic development to rising income of consumers. Banks and insurance companies are two indispensable sectors in providing credit, risk management, financial protection as well as other benefits. The interrelationship between these two sectors has become more important than ever before and this cooperation will bring benefits to all stakeholders from the organization itself, end consumers to the whole society

KEYNOTE 2 – Mobilization of sales forces and business operations in an era of omnichannel Strategy

With rapid expansion of mobile data communication coverage across Cambodia, more chances to mobilize sales forces farther into provinces.  Also channels to reach customers keep stacking up and growing.  However, any diversification or relocation of business operations could discount outcomes from expansions. With reference to industries outside of banking sector, would like to talk about what is being done with what services

Solving the Banking last mile

Financial services are built on customer identification and trust; traditionally performed in a bank branch and secure ATM machines. Emerging markets are already addressing identification using cards, especially with chip+pin technology. However, due to high costs, bank branches and ATMs are only viable in cities. The question is then how can banks extend their existing networks into remote locations at low cost and with low risk? The first step is to extend the existing banking network, solving the last mile problem, opening a channel for banks to provide services to the underbanked community.

Avoid disruptions in your banking operations – Beware of Technology Debt!

As more and more banks move towards the inevitable digital age, financial services will need to become more aware of the pitfalls that lie ahead. Consumers and corporations demand more digital services, banks and financial institutions want to offer such services so as to keep and acquire more customers. Then, as mobile & internet technologies become more accessible, banks from developing countries also try to keep up. However, as more entry points are opened into a protected banking environment, disruptions in the financial industry is well documented with hacking and malware entering the systems to create havoc. Such disruptions cause a lot of costs and delays and ultimately, trust in the banking system is affected.

PKI and Banking in Cambodia: Are we ready?

Security is of paramount importance to the banking sector. So most banks in the world have adopted PKI as a secure environment for its information distribution.  The PKI option offered the twin benefits of authentication and encryption, so if potentially sensitive documents were intercepted or lost, they would remain secure.  An additional benefit is that PKI uses online communication, which is faster and more efficient than phones and faxes.   A private-key or symmetric system requires that both the information sender and receiver share a single key that is used to encrypt and decrypt data. Securely distributing the key is cumbersome and difficult with its greatest pitfall being the loss or compromise of the key makes the information it encrypts vulnerable. In 1976, Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman published a revolutionary paper titled, “New Directions in Cryptography,” which introduced the concept of public-key or asymmetric cryptographic keys. A public-key system utilizes two complementary keys: a public-key, which is designed to be shared, and a private-key that is secret. They created a formula, the Diffie-Hellman algorithm, that allowed a practical public-key cipher for both confidentiality and digital signatures, based on the difficulty of factoring large numbers.  This is when PKI was born.

Improve the Management Capabilities of Resources and Infrastructure

Cambodia continues to enjoy robust growth, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Real growth in the garment sector, together with construction and services, are the main drivers of the economy. Growth is expected to remain strong in 2016, as recovering internal demand and dynamic garment exports offset stagnation in agriculture and softer growth in tourism. For the banking industry - Credit & Deposit to GDP keep increasing to 63.46% and 61.85% respectively. At the same time, loan & deposit growth also increase 25.65% & 17.38%; NPL of banking sector is decreasing from 2.22% to 1.99% while MFI sector is slightly increase from 0.59% in 2014 to 0.77% in 2015 (source NBC). To align with this Growth Cambodia Post Bank is committed to pushing beyond established frontiers of development knowledge to bring policy relevant strategies to client to support broad-based growth, jobs, and poverty reduction. We provide ongoing support to our clients though in-country consultations, on-demand technical analysis, in-depth topical flagship reports, and regional economic updates.
